With all the urban excitement of New York City, it’s easy to forget that their nearby beaches offer families and adults a great summer beach holiday. Fire Island is “The Greatest Little Sandbar on the Eastern Seaboard,” With over a dozen beach communities on Fire Island, New York sun-seekers can choose from a wide array of attractions. The Pines is the largest, most expensive community, with an atmosphere reminding of us Monte Carlo. Beach Activities include walking the boardwalks, sunbathing, an exciting nightlife, and even surfing. If you’re seeking wholesome, family activities, be aware: The Pines on Fire Island is sometimes labeled as hedonistic and very “open-minded,” attracting a strong gay presence.
In sharp contrast, the tiny villages of Saltaire and Ocean Beach are exceptionally tranquil, quiet, and conservative. Both of these New York Beach communities have rules restricting vehicle traffic, limited the use of bikes, and controlling pet animals on the beachfront, so be sure to review their on-line information packages and check the tips for lodging, dining, and activities.
Greenport
New York is a historic, three century old seaport, rich in maritime
history. Travel Guides rank Greenport
highly as a well-preserved, charming settlement by the sea. The shops are quaint, with fine dining
available. For New York Beach
activity, we traveled to nearby Southold and enjoyed both Kenny’s Beach and McCabe’s Beach. Both areas had restroom facilities and
lifeguards.
