Makalawena is a fabulous beach though it does take some effort to get to. It is a couple of miles north of Kona Airport. If you are going north on Queen K Highway (Hwy 19), after you go past the airport watch for a sign that says "Kekaha Kai State... more on Tripadvisor
The girls and I had the day to ourselves so we thought we'd visit Makalawena Beach because it was raved about in our guidebook. We found the turn-off from Hwy 19 and thought it didn't look too bad to drive. I had a rental Sebring convertible. Well... more on Tripadvisor

Kailua Kona is the Big Island of Hawaii’s best opportunity for beaches, snorkeling, and diving with small-town friendly people.  Nearby Kahaluu Beach Park sports the best snorkeling opportunity -- beautiful white sand beach, tropical fish, and a rock jetty to protect visitors from the Kona surf.  First-time divers at Kailua Kona Hawaii love the large schools of tame fish, swimming up to greet you.  Snorkel along the shallow and calm Kona beachfront, suitable for kids, adults, and seniors.

The Mauna Kea Resort was our top choice for the best Kailua Kona beach vacation.  Mauna Kea beach is crescent shaped, with a full quarter mile of perfect white sand.  The resort offers luxurious dining, lodging, and even a world-class 18 hole golf course.  Kailua Kona Activities here include snorkeling, surfing, swimming, fishing, and sun-bathing.  Because parking is limited, we prefer staying right at Mauna Kea Resort.

If you’d prefer a quiet, secluded Kailua Kona Beach, we suggest Makalawena, located just four miles north of the airport.  The Kekaha Kai State Park is home to Makalawena, which is actually a series of three small cove beaches.  Although Kailua Kona Travel Guides list this beach, you’ll usually find less than a dozen others swimming at this hidden gem of Kailua Kona.  Be sure to visit Let’s Go Hawaii’s Beach Guide for the most complete activity and beach listings for Kailua Kona, Hawaii.
