- High above the Etowah River sits the Lake Allatoona Visitors Center, guarding the most beautiful views in the region. The approach to the center is marked and once there the Etowah River valley spreads out partially filled by Lake Allatoona. - Approved by Congress in 1941, the project was delayed by World War II until 1946. Completed in January, 1950, the dam was built by the Army Corps of Engineers at a cost of $31 million dollars.
