Geologists believe Bodega Head was once a part of the Tehachapi Mountains, located 300 miles south of Sonoma County. The San Andreas Fault runs underneath Bodega Head, both connecting it to and separating it from the mainland. On the West side of the fault, Bodega Head is comprised of granite, which can be found nowhere else along the coast, except for at Point Reyes and the Farallone Islands, until one reaches the Tehachapis.
