Alameda,
California has great
beaches! Just outside of Oakland, on the south
side of San Francisco
Bay, Alameda was separated off from the mainland
by a long trench dug for area shipping resulted in Alameda’s long and narrow shape. Crown Memorial Beach is run
by the parks district, sporting a 2.5 mile sand beach with bicycle and
handicapped access, with free wheelchairs available to the public. Shallow, warm waters make Crown Memorial
Beach excellent families
with younger kids. Young adults enjoy
wind surfing along the beach area, and kite flying is enjoyed by all age
groups. It’s a pet-friendly place, with dogs allowed on the lawn areas. There’s naturalist-guided programs and
fishing allowed from the shore. Online
there’s great links for the Crab
Cove Visitors Center. Historic Neptune Beach
Amusement Park was
nearby. You can catch a glimpse of that
area from Crab Cove. The rides are gone,
but Neptune Beach’s resort homes are worth a look.
Older kids, teens, and young adults enjoy thrilling skateboard
rides at the Cityview Skate Park,
up on Alameda Point. The park was built
by volunteers, with paved areas for skateboarding and bicycling. If you’re lacking skateboarding skills, enjoy
watching the ships transiting the bay.
